Director's statement:
Lili’s Paradise is more than a story, a group of episodes in the life of Lili Jiménez, a 10-year-old girl from Lima who questions everything, from god’s existence to her maid’s working status. Ernesto, her only brother is 18 and he is her ideological master. Lili’s days go by playing basketball in her school -while her friends do the first communion-, or playing in her dollhouse. When Ernesto decides to leave home, to become a guerrilla, Lili will have to put her life together again without the help of her idol. This story is set in 1988, when Peru was facing a big crisis due to a disastrous government and the constant advances of Shining Path, a communist armed party. I think that shooting in black and white would be appropriate to portray these times of political extremism. This choice would also contribute to achieve a certain distance towards childhood, to look at it with nostalgia but without sentimentalism. Among other things, “Lili’s Paradise” is about a girl’s fight to conciliate her childhood with her early knowledge of the world’s troubles. Visually, I would like to mimic the amazing energy of a 9-year-old girl and also her intimate, most delicate and imaginative side, when she plays in her dollhouse creating characters and scenes that are idyllic and real at the same time.
